Wolfgang Georgsdorf:
NO(I)SE
2013
Olfactory movie via SMELLER 2.0
Synesthetical expanded cinema installation
26 min., sound, colour, scent
The realisation of Wolfgang Georgsdorf's 'Smeller 2.0 / Olfactorium' for the major exhibition 'Sinnesrausch / Sensory Sensation' in 2012 triggered multiple possibilities for using the instrument, as scent compositions and scent sequences can now be programmed and replayed with it. Now the artist is presenting NO(I)SE, his first olfactory movie as an installation for cinema on behalf of the OK-Lab in the Upper Austrian Cultural Quarter in Linz for the filmfestival CROSSING EUROPE 2013. A concentrated intimate chamber piece for cinema, that comes along as a powerful document of the very kinds of signals which form the perceptive components of cinema and its extension: Darkness, light and colour, silence, tone and sound – and now scent.

SMELLER 2.0, developed and built by Wolfgang Georgsdorf in 2012 as a result of a distinct longterm inter- and transdisciplinary project, is a genuine electronic organ of smells, a time-based olfacto-kinetic art device for composing, staging, programming, recording, storing and playing dramatic compositions from thousands of smells and smell-sequences. It also comprises a notation system for writing down the smell scenarios – the 'Smellodies' as Georgsdorf calls them.
While Google had launched „Google Nose' as an April 1st prank this year, Smeller 2.0 is reality: For the first time numerous visions and dreams of odor-combined arts are about to become true and kick off a paradigm: Time based olfactory composing, collective experience of smell-scapes, concerts with „music for the nose' combined with any other form of artistic discipline, multisensory performances and now – no kidding – „Smellodies' over internet. No wonder that the artist has a patent pending on SMELLER.
SMELLER 2.0 and one of the first few works done with and for it can be experienced for the last time before disappearing in the overseas containers for now, to be revived in it's new mid- or longterm venue – then with new „Synolfies' again.
Along with the screenings of NO(I)SE the Gallery Hofkabinett in Linz opens the exhibition RIECHER on 21st April with olfactory based works of the artist (hofkabinett.at) and comes up with a six part art print edition on SMELLER 2.0.
