Barracao Maravilha (The Wonder Shed) is an artist run space in Rio de Janeiro since january 2008. The name Barracao Maravilha is refering to the big studios used for preparing the decorations of the carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Barracao Maravilha is one of the few artist-run spaces presenting contemporary visual art in Rio de Janeiro.
The complete original title of the show is:
'Do gelo da Escandinavia ao fogo tropical, o Barracao Maravilha recria na Terra um inferno de delicias'
In a free english translation:
'From the ice of Scandinavia to the tropical fire, the Wonder Shed recreates a hell on earth made of delights'
The title is refering to the titles used in the carnival, which are most of the time very long and poetic, at the limit of the absurd.
The starting point of this show was the launch of the film 'The Studio Visit' by Kristofer Paetau - a Finnish artist living in Rio de Janeiro. The film was shot in Barracao Maravilha with two actors in the roles of 'The desperate artist' (Kristofer Paetau) and 'The transvestite art collector' (Dandara).
The works of the team of artists of Barracao Maravilha were made especially for the occasion. And the invitation to the Trash Trans musical performance duo Solange To Aberta!, proposed by Kristofer Paetau, could not be more appropriate for this event.

The film depicts in a parodic way the meeting of a desperate artist with an art collector. Besides being a parody, the film deconstructs various aspects of power, of communication and of consumption in the artworld. In order to increase the difficulty of the performance for the improvised transvestite actor Dandara, the artist imposed the 'universal artworld language' for the unprepared actor who does not speak nor understand english. The film - with sexually explicit scenes - is shown with Portugese subtitles and has a running time of 9 minutes.

The main intention of Solange To Aberta! (Solange I am open!) is to challenge, deconstruct and expose situations, habits, behavior and discourses used by different segments of the society, representing the GLBT and other sexual minority communities, identities and practices. The band experiments and questions different mainstream electronic music styles - for example the typical Funk of Rio de Janeiro which is extremely machist and sexually explicit.
Conception by Zé Carlos - sculpture
Zé Carlos performs live sculptures with organic materials, questioning our conceptions morally and ethically. His work starts with the manipulation of static 'bodies' - not only static but also dead bodies. He uses natural or artificial bodies, creating beings or objects hitherto non-existent.
The Spangled Man by Natali Tubenchlak - super-hero
The artist approaches real and imaginary characters with irony using the aesthetics of children's stories and comics. With expressive and contradictory colors and often grotesque forms and gloomy situations, the work of Natali refers to social contexts, childhood and family.
Dragon by Robson - design
The artist uses drawing as crossover media. Integrated into photography, translated in audiovisual language and integrated in industrial material.
