MONEY, MARKET, PATRONAGE

In art, there is no escaping the market. Now and then, it becomes even more inescapable than otherwise. Today is such a moment. The bubble is enormous, all-embracing, in the sense that there is almost nothing in art that is not being touched by the millions being invested in it. Money, Market, Patronage takes a closer look at the ubiquitous flirtation with the art market, by way of several contemporary phenomena: art fairs, cultural patrons, dutch design in limited editions and private investments in museums.

DANIEL ROTH; SAÂDANE AFIF; SONSBEEK 1971-2008

This issue includes interviews with Daniel Roth, currently exhibiting at ZKM in Karlsruhe, and Saâdane Afif, on his retrospective at Witte de With, Rotterdam, as well as an in-depth evaluation of the Netherlands' most important outdoor sculpture exhibition, Sonsbeek Arnhem, which opens this year with a procession of sculptures through the Arnhem city centre.

RENZO MARTENS; MATTI BRAUN; ANSELM FRANKE

And more: Matti Braun describes his favourite work of art; Renzo Martens' work criticizing engaged photography from Africa; a report on art in Surinam; and a personal portrait of Anselm Franke, one of this summer's curators at Manifesta 7 in Sud Tirol.
