About the artists
Jörg Lohse studied at a university known for being one of the biggest talent hotbeds in contemporary painting: the Hochschule fuer Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. Lohse is best known for his collage-like oil paintings using similar elements from current advertising and magazine campaigns: beautiful women, international corporation logos and a heavy dose of sex appeal are almost always the key subject matter. At 'Contemporary Istanbul,' Berlin Art Projects will be showing another side of the artist. Instead of his usual large-format oil paintings, Lohse has created a series of delicate watercolors - among them puzzlingly beautiful portraits of young women framed by a dominant slogan, or close-ups of young men whose iconic look jumps back and forth between abstraction and closeness. The changing of facades and the hidden 'I', the artificial and the real, strong and weak – all become a part of the viewer's experience of the work. Jörg Lohse, born 1967 in Leipzig, Germany lives and works in Chiemsee, Bavaria.
31-year old artist Christian Awe has made the leap from Street Art and graffiti to contemporary art. With success: He's considered one of the many promising young Berlin painters, studied under Georg Baselitz, then as a master student under Daniel Richter at the Universität der Künste Berlin. He places the canvas on the floor when he works, using mostly acrylic and spray for his usually large-format paintings – intensive explosions of color that lend the images the unique character typical to Awe. Awe's artwork is featured in numerous German and international collections. Previous exhibitions include: 'Abstract Worlds – Sam Francis/Christian Awe' Berlin Art Projects, Berlin; 'Spirit of the Fugue' piano- and painting performance with Andrea Fan at the Royal Academy of Music, London; 'New Walls from Europe' Sundaram Tagore Gallery, New York. The artist was nominated for the ZVAB-PHOENIX prize for emerging artists in 2008.
