'Foto Kvartals' team is pleased to announce the release of the anniversery issue – 'Foto Kvartals' No. 20 is out! The only magazine on photography and contemporary visual culture published in Latvia presents selected works by Latvian and international artists as well as commissioned reviews and essays on photography history and photography in contemporary art.

'Foto Kvartals' No. 20 presents:

Wilhelm Mikhailovsky
, classic master of photographic art based in Riga, Latvia. His works from the late 1970s and early 1980s, created using montage and complicated artist's own techniques, contain numerous rich layers of visual, philosophical and artistic meaning that are uncovered by art historian Alise Tifentale.

Reinis Hofmanis
, a promising young artist and photographer based in Riga, Latvia. His series 'Model' invites into a rather gloomy albeit creative atmosphere of the Art Academy studios where students are taught to draw from nude models.

Janis Bokums
, a photographer whose studio produced the most significant urban landscape photographs of Liepaja city in the first half of the 20th century.

Ghislain Mollet-Viéville
, legendary and eccentric French 'l'agent d'art'. His strategies in the 1970s included photo sessions in his apartment-gallery where models and himself posed besides the most famous works of Minimal and Conceptual art thus presenting contemporary art as an integral part of chic lifestyle.

Delphine Balley, a photographer based in Lyon, France. Her phantasmagoric photo stories can be inspired by the artist's own private experiences as well as constructed around mysterious events covered in Victorian era newspapers.

Yaniv Waissa
, a photographer based in Jerusalem, Israel. After reviewing his black and white photographs, PhD Janis Taurens expands on the different notions related to architecture in contemporary photography.

'Scenes and Traces of a Fall'. Berlin, 1989, fall of the Wall and photographers documenting it. Exhibition is commented by Dr. Matthias Harder, curator at Helmut Newton Foundation, who curated the exhibition in Brandenburger Tor, Berlin.

Other topics include:
selected photographic works as seen in Frieze and Zoo art fairs, an interview with Tatyana Kurtanova, general director of Moscow photo gallery – 'actual pictures boutique' FotoLoft, latest news from the Preus Museum in Horten, Norway, and, last but not least, an extravagant parade of Soviet-era photo-postcards with different curious ways of saying 'Hapy New Year'.

'Foto Kvartals'
is published by publishing house Neputns. The magazine is being generously supported by State Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia.

'Foto Kvartals' magazine is published bi-monthly in Latvian and partly in English. Subscriptions and back issues available with worldwide delivery.
