The only 29-year-old Turkish sculptor Yasam Sasmazer has recently been a hot tip among collectors as the next generation. Her solid wood sculptures are life-sized figures of children, the disturbing aura of which sheds new light on the age old question of 'good and evil'.
The artist says the following about her work:
THE OMINOUS LAND
'The main theme of my sculptures could be called 'humanity' in general, in particular the notion of being a 'child.' My intent is to reconstruct the good and the evil, dark and the luminous traits inherent to human beings as a whole while questioning the social clichés, identities and cultural structure surrounding these ideas.
I transport the cruel and aggressive potential lurking in every human being to the still physically and psychologically immature bodies of children: Children that have not yet been made to conform to society...'
'The Ominous Land', the new catalogue with work by Yasam Sasmazer, is available as of now at the gallery Berlin Art Projects.
(Published 2009, German and English).
Yasam Sasmazer, *1980 in Istanbul/Turkey, lives and works in Istanbul and is represented by the Berlin gallery Berlin Art Projects.
