Fabrice Gygi, born Geneva 1965, will represent Switzerland at the 53rd Venice Biennale starting June 7th, 2009.
Gygi’s paradoxical, disquieting works “Re-transcribe things observed in the world” keeping them “realistic”. Industrial raw materials create complex structures which make simple statements and ask complex questions. To create his objects and give them shape, the artist transforms and enhances existing elements by means of simplification and caricature.
Yet again, Fabrice Gygi will take the public by surprise with the powerful and brutal simplicity of his latest installation titled “Economat”. The open structure occupies the center of the Church of San Stae. It is a store room, waiting to be filled with objects and perhaps people. It is both a mobile and a movable place; temporary while permanent.
Fabrice Gygi will also attend Art Unlimited, Basel, June 10th to 14th where a new series of works will be presented jointly by Galerie Chantal Crousel, Paris, and Galerie Guy Bärtschi, Geneva.
