You are cordially invited to the presentation of Umělec International Magazine for Contemporary Art and Culture.
Come to learn the answer to the question, 'Does The End of the Western Concept mean the beginning of the Eastern One?' At least you could find out how philosophers, artists, writers, and intellectuals of both West and East are looking for the answer—posing the questions and critically analyzing the situation in a global world.
For the West we are always the East. Yet, for the East we are nothing other than the West. Being in this ambiguous, but not so unique geographic and cultural situation, we try to look in both directions, critically; with a bitter irony we observe the collapsing ideals of 'The Western Concept' while simultaneously taking note of increasingly penetrating 'Eastern Ideas'—and their occasionally absurd and fanatic reinterpretation by disappointed nihilists of the West.
Prague-based Umělec magazine—with editorial offices in London, Berlin, Vienna, New York, Bejiing, and Mexico, and published in English, German, Spanish and Czech—has from the outset defined itself as a space for equitable dialogue among all cultures.
Initiating a new discussion, formally entitled The End of Western Concept, we are simply following our original desire to critically comprehend the current social, political and economic processes in a global world, without which contemporary art couldn't be reviewed and understood. Moreover, art is the most vibrant and flexible means of expression, able to promptly reflect upon all global and regional processes.
At the presentation the audience will be introduced to Umělec magazine highlights from 1997 to the present with posters, videos and original art works by Czech and international artists and authors.
Two editors from Prague will take part in the presentation: William Hollister and Alena Boika, in addition to artists and writers associated with the magazine in the New York area.
