In cooperation with the British Council, the Schering Stiftung presents the exhibition project 'Weaving the Universe: From Atoms to Stars' by Peruvian artist Fiorella Lavado and British physicist and historian of science Arthur I. Miller.
The artist will be showing her most recent works, which are made of stainless-steel wire, at the Project Space. The sculptures, created in discussion dialogue with Arthur I. Miller, provide the viewer with an idea of the phenomena of the universe which are basically invisible and difficult to grasp.
The exhibition will be launched on 9 September 2010 at 6pm with a lecture by Arthur I. Miller and Fiorella Lavado at the Robert-Koch-Forum of the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin. With the title 'A Journey Between Two Worlds' they will introduce the theme of the exhibition. The exhibition will be presented at the Schering Stiftung from 10 September.
FIORELLA LAVADO & ARTHUR I. MILLER ABOUT THEIR EXHIBITION:
'Weaving the Universe: From Atoms to Stars' originates from a unique collaboration between an artist and a scientist. This unusual approach requires that the artist strives to understand scientific concepts and the scientist is willing to examine nature from an artistic point of view. It seeks to evoke the ambiguity and beauty of the cosmos in the large – black holes and wormholes – and in the small – atoms, electrons and light quanta – while exploring the human mind, the means by which we imagine these strange worlds.'
A panel discussion with the title 'Beyond Scientific Visualisation' will take place at the Schering Stiftung on 7 October 2010 at 7pm. The five panel members will approach the topic from a scientific or artistic background and will consider questions such as 'Are collaborations between artists and scientists able to produce work capable of advancing scientific research?', 'Is art able to serve science without losing its artistic integrity?' or 'Are artistic concepts, like beauty, symmetry, and aesthetics, able to fertilize the increasingly complex and abstract visual language of science?'.
