The Cynthia Corbett Gallery is delighted to present Young Masters @ SPHINX, to showcase a selection of artists that reflect the ideas behind the Young Masters Art Prize, which was launched in 2009 by London-based American gallerist, Cynthia Corbett.
The Young Masters Art Prize is a unique not-for-profit competition, which aims to expose and give international recognition to emerging and newly established artists who are inspired by the Old Masters. We want to encourage and nurture their evolving careers through the publicity that this exhibition and prize offers.
To launch the Young Masters Art Prize 2012, the exhibition Young Masters @ SPHINX will exhibit a range of artists who challenge contemporary modes of artistic practice and reflect back on the genius of the Old Masters. Their work will hang alongside masterpieces from Sphinx Fine Art's own Old Master collection. Whether celebratory or irreverent, these contemporary artists, juxtaposed with their predecessors, will prompt novel insight into the dynamic tradition of hierarchies in the art-historical canon.
An exciting range of artists, including Holly Stevenson, David Ben White, Lex Thomas, Jack Spencer Ashworth, Adeline de Monseignat, Victoria Hall, Charlotte Bracegirdle, Leigh Chorlton, Anna King (courtesy of Gallery Heinzel), Jamie Lumley, Nick Cuthell, Nina Fowler (courtesy of Galerie Dukan Hourdequin) and Tracy Satchwill will respond directly to the collection held by Sphinx and explore the realms of historical narrative, portraiture, landscape and still life.
Young Masters Art Prize 2012 will officially open for artist applications in January 2012, with a solo exhibition of the 2009 Young Masters Art Prize winners Ghost of Dream in the Projects section of the London Art Fair. Following a rigorous selection process, the Young Masters Art Prize 2012 awards ceremony and exhibition, curated by Daria Kahn of the Spazio Carbonesi Foundation in Bologna, will take place in November, 2012, on prestigious Cork Street, Mayfair W1. Chair of the judging panel is renowned art historian and journalist Godfrey Barker; also on the judging panel are Colin Wiggins (Head of Education of the National Gallery, London); Jerwood-prize winning artist Adam Dant; and Roy Bolton, Old Master dealer and TV presenter of arts programme 'Show me the Monet'.
