THOMAS BONNY
LE DÉTOUR DE L'AIGUILLE
'One cannot just saunter willy-nilly into the Kunsthalle Marcel Duchamp. Its miniature proportions are in no way conducive to wandering hither and thither, and it is so configured that the visitor's view of space is never anything but fragmentary. So I decided to exhibit an installation comprising elements having a materiality that would awaken mental associations with a particularly sinuous, meandering, endless path. Due to the extreme lack of space, I chose a circular arrangement with bends and bifurcations rather than straight lines, an arrangement that would induce the viewer to take a mental stroll, thus following a certain path and hence moving forward in time, chronologically, as in a labyrinth, that very archetype of space that generates time. The image of the labyrinth is of course intended, and biased, for it makes full reference to the spirit of Marcel Duchamp, whose oeuvre is labyrinthine, both in its intentions and in its interpretation.'
