The World Explained
09.12.2011 – 11.03.2012
What is creativity? Can stereotypes change? What use is humour? Tropenmuseum presents The World Explained, a project by Mexican artist Erick Beltrán and the people of Amsterdam.
In September 2011, Beltrán sent out a team of young anthropologists to interview people in the city. These interviews are collated in a contemporary encyclopaedia. The results are shown at the Tropenmuseum. In the exhibition visitors can add their own theories to the growing collection.
Erick Beltrán is inspired by micro-history, where personal stories form the principal source. He has already produced editions of The World Explained in São Paulo (2008) and Barcelona (2009). When the show finishes, the three editions will be combined in a single volume.
