The Artist and the Paradox of History Seminar in Helsinki September 28-29
The seminar is organized by The Finnish Academy of Fine Arts and The Finnish National Gallery and it will take place at the Ateneum art museum. It is a part of the project Changing Identities and Contexts in the Arts: Artistic Research as the New European Paradigm for the Arts (CICA). The seminar will revolve around the theme The Artist and the Paradox of History.
In the last 20 years we have noticed a decrease of historical consciousness in the art world. The leading paradigm seemed to be horizontal globalization and the art market. But with this increase of horizontality, it seems that artists, in their practice and thinking, are paradoxically focusing more and more on time-related issues, such as the examination of the past, archival practices and the re-invention of history as a specific space. This symposium demands attention for this last phenomenon: artist's new histories. How can we situate them? What do they mean for the current situation of the art practice? And what role can they play in the development of new forms of criticality?
The seminar will feature two keynote speakers, Andrey Parshikov (curator, Moscow) and Manal Al-Dowayan (artist, Saudi-Arabia). Other presentators will be Roger Palmer (artist, Great Britain), Tiong Ang (artist, The Netherlands), Katrin von Maltzahn (artist, Germany), Andreas Gedin (artist, Sweden), Lara Eggleton (doctoral student, art history, University of Leeds), Henna-Riikka Halonen (doctoral student, Finnish Academy of Fine Arts), Ulrika Ferm (artist, Finland/Berlin) and Vahap Avsar (artist, Turkey/USA).
In conjunction to the seminar there is an exhibition, Thinking Tools, at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts gallery FAFA (Lönnrotinkatu 35).
