Equilibrium
Antonio Guiotto, Francesco Bertelé
November 3 – 23, 2012. Asolo, Treviso
This letter that I am sending you, obviously written on the wrong day and from far away, is as if it evolved along a narrow path between two very steep ridges. On one side, the risk of being unable to put down the words, to fall into a vortex of images that can generate nothing but other images; on the other side is the fear of rising to become a bigoted television personality, trying to give a symbolic meaning to all these monsters. And in the middle, if we succeed in keeping our balance, if we manage to stay on our feet, the path will lead to this house: a lunge on the world, the precise choice to stay here and to start from what stands in front of our eyes. Like a mushroom, or every other parasite, which lives on what the host has to offer. Or at least it tries to.
Francesco Bertelé always presents new observation points for the world. Being his artworks made up by tree huts, a path in a forest, or half-lighted rooms, in them the gaze gets thinner and explores with wonder objects and landscapes, which then are revised through a long process leading to the constitution of a new space of experience.
Assenza d'Opera-Respiro, the most recent body of works, comprises sculptural gestures in which formal associations, grafts and bakings transform some life leftovers into multiform chimeras, speechless presences where the most intimate inner vision is melting together with the embrace of the outside world.
Story-telling is a central aspect of Antonio Guiotto's practice, whose artworks ponder on the ways and the aims of telling stories – the history of art, his own story, and many more, with a large array of styles and poses: sometimes ironic, others dramatic, often long-winded, occasionally reticent.
His interventions, spreading from texts to performances and sculptures, constitute structures which implement the reality, and at the same time, by trying to keep it on its feet, highlight its extreme precariousness. Clues of meaning percolate through a thick sieve of hints and quotations, together with a promise of much more solid constructions, the dream of a house which can face every storm.
