EME>>, ESTÚDIO MÓVEL EXPERIMENTAL, INVITES SOLAR WORLD CINEMA AND STUDENTS FROM TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY CEFET/RJ FOR AN ARTISTIC RESIDENCY WHICH COMBINES ART, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SUSTAINABILITY TO CREATE A MOBILE CINEMA PLATFORM.
In its third edition, EME >> (Experimental Mobile Studio), will receive Dutch artist Maureen Prins, founder and curator from Solar World Cinema, to participate in EME>>'s residency program with film projections powered by solar energy. During the program she will also give a workshop for undergraduate students from Technological University CEFET-RJ in the areas of Mechanical, Electrical and Broadcasting engineering, in the neighborhoods of Maracanã and Maria da Graça. EME>>, consists of an interdisciplinary mobile platform for research, focusing on Mata Atlantica, which works in the intersections between art, science, technology and sustainability. In this collaboration with Maureen Prins, EME>>'s vehicle will be transformed into a mobile solar powered cinema. Throughout the residence, Maureen will team up with students from CEFET-RJ to develop this transdisciplinary research, encouraging them to find solutions for the vehicle's customization, such as the installation of solar panels to power the audiovisual system and possible new energy sources. These solutions will be created and adapted collectively to be used in future editions of EME>> project as well.
Also as curators and organizers of the project, participating students will present a selection of short films on the theme of nature / sustainable energy and will produce a documentary about the development process of the mobile cinema. The workshop takes place in the first week of the residency, 19 to 25 November, with the customization of the vehicle. The following week, in the evenings 27/11 (Praça Saes Peña), 29/11 (Morro Dona Marta) and 01/12 (Praça Tiradentes) always from 20 to 22h, will be dedicated to the projections of the videos selected by the resident artist, curated together with the students. The projection of November 29 will feature special guest Platforma VideUrbe, which proposes the students and artists to select videos that explore other surfaces beyond the screens.
EME >> EME >> Estúdio Móvel Experimental is a mobile residency working in a platform between art and science researching the natural environment and sustainability. EME >> has two main functions: as a customized camper van that is designed to be ecological, i.e., to adapt its machinery to the natural environment; and also as a mobile studio that can support facilities to explore the urban and natural environment, realize public/ live arts and educational events around the Guanabara Bay in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It opens space for artists and researchers to use the EME>>machine as a tool for communication and interface their work, the natural environment and the audience, always working with partner institutions and conducting interventions in unusual spaces.
Ivan Henriques, visual artist and director of EME >>, says that this project reflects a mobile architecture practicality in line with nomadic movements and 'DIY' (Do It Yourself), democratizing instruments for research, production and documentation. EME supports >> contemporary artists, show casing visual arts events in the public sphere and site-specific activities. It also facilitates the educational exchange through workshops led by residents artists and students where the vehicle passes, using free tools such as media, internet, digital recording equipment, video and photography, sound and robotics. The results are always available online at www.emeemtransito.netii.net. It is be available audios, photos, videos and texts documenting the history of each artist in residence. This space is a virtual channel that promotes works and researches.
The third edition of this project was only possible with support from Mondriaan Fund.
