Gonçalo Barreiros's project at EMPTY CUBE

The project Gonçalo Barreiros will bring to EMPTY CUBE on January 18th 2013 was especially conceived for this event, which consists of a single, unrepeatable presentation. His work will be displayed at the premises of CAPC - Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra, Portugal. A major cultural institution, the CAPC has dedicated itself, since its foundation in 1958, to the display and promotion of Portuguese contemporary art. The building in Parque de Santa Cruz that will host EMPTY CUBE was conceived by Atelier do Corvo, the studio of architects Désirée Pedro and Carlos Antunes.

Gonçalo Barreiros' project, which focuses on the rapports that develop between the architectural space and the visitor's presence, is carried out as an intervention in the EMPTY CUBE space (also the work of a duo of architects), which for one night will become an invasive space at the CAPC gallery. Barreiros adopts a critical stance by changing the cube's inner scale and reconfiguring its entrance via the installation of two contrivances that change the function of the space, bringing it close to the universe of commercial facilities, with their usual security systems.
