Uncertain States 2013 is an annual exhibition is curated by Uncertain States featuring photography by their contributors and collaborators. Restraining from a thematic presentation, their annual exhibitions are an opportunity to showcase the artists, both established and emerging, who have contributed to the on-going dialogue on visual imagery through talks and print. This year's exhibition will bring together works by 28 photographers including Julie Cockburn, Tom Hunter, kennardphillips, Richard Sawdon Smith and John Goto to name a few.

Uncertain States is a lens based, artist led platform to mediate critical dialogue. Monthly talks, a quarterly broadsheet and an annual exhibition form launch pads to share and discuss the creative process among peers and photography enthusiasts.

David George, Spencer Rowell and Fiona Yaron-Field set up Uncertain States in 2009 after completing their MA studies at The Cass Art School. They wanted to create a format where artists like them could show work to the public and also have a platform to share and support each other's artistic practice. They started with quarterly publications, which has grown to include monthly 'Salon Talks' and an annual exhibition.

Open to both established and new practitioners based in the UK, Uncertain States nurtures work that reflects key social and political concerns, and challenges how perception is formed in a society like ours, on issues as diverse as politics, religion, ethnicity, gender and personal identity. In a time where the proliferation of imagery is rendering itself insignificant and meaningless, Uncertain States is concerned with the intention of the work, the meaning and reading of the photograph. They enlist contributions from carefully selected writers in the broadsheet to underpin this process.

Uncertain States strongly believes in the value of ensuring exposure of photographic work to people also outside the traditional photographic arena. Currently the broadsheet is available to collect for free from various distribution points including V&A , Rich Mix, Flowers East, Four Corners, The Bear Pit and Baltic Newcastle to name a few. They strive to break down barriers by establishing wider distribution to museums and galleries across the country.
