Decollection
The status of art in the era of knowledge
Paddle8*, new-generation auctioneers based in New York and Los Angeles, is preparing the 'Decollection' sale for the Paris Biennale which will take place between 21st October and 3rd November 2013 on the website paddle8.com
The Paris Biennale was founded by André Malraux with the aim of providing a meeting ground for those who would shape the art of the future. The 18th edition began on 1st October, 2012 and will end on 30th September, 2014.
The works championed by the Paris Biennale which will be put up for auction on Paddle8 have as a theme the turning of 'product-value' into 'activity-value'.
It includes experiments, protocols, services, products, documents, social trends or proof of lifestyle.
To decollect art can imply another way of conceiving a collection, different from the traditional accumulation of works which relies on storage. The collector is included from the start in the fresh concept of creation at the very moment the artwork frees itself from traditional specifications. His status is now that of author and not mere collector. Conceiving that new collecting policy challenges the notion of value, material value and ownership.
To decollect art is adopting a new mindset, it means no longer owning but being.
