The School of Creative Media of the City University of Hong Kong is now accepting admissions for the Doctor of Philosophy in Creative Media. Deadline for all uploaded documents December 4th 2013. Applicants are strongly advised to submit draft applications as soon as possible so they can get feedback before final submission.
School of Creative Media (SCM), founded in 1998, is Hong Kong's first institution committed to research across art, computing, technology, animation, music, sociology, and engineering.
Candidates will have advanced knowledge of media art, art history, arts institutions, and curating, or relevant fields of inquiry. They are required to hold a minimum four-year Bachelor's degree with Honours, and a research Master's qualification in a relevant discipline. Candidates should apply with a research project relevant to SCM's research foci and PhD supervisory expertise. Given the very nature of creative media and media art, interdisciplinary projects as well as those with an element of practice-based research are encouraged. Numerous scholarships covering the cost of PhD studies are available at the governmental level as well as at the level of the City University of Hong Kong and are awarded after assessment of the academic merits and artistic potential of the candidates.

Dr. Linda Chiu-han Lai
Linda Lai's Ph.D. education in Cinema Studies (NYU) comprised of three comprehensive areas including media theory and documentary history, whereas her doctoral thesis research specialized in the theory and practice of cultural historiography. Lai's teaching and research at the School of Creative Media has extended her doctoral training into image studies for new media, experimental historiography, visual ethnography and ethno-methodologies in general, premised on Critical Theory and phenomenological approaches. Lai is also an internationally published interdisciplinary artist in media and contemporary art. Her best known works are videography that interrogates the intersection of experimental cinema, documentary and moving-image prose and poetry. Lai's digital works also explore generative thinking in contemporary art. Her latest published works include a mixed media installation at the 9th Shanghai Biennale 2012 and an algorithmic 3-channel video projection in the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Awards 2012 Exhibition (2013), both exploring found objects and found material from popular culture and everyday life.
Areas of supervision
Media archaeology, historiography and current trend in contemporary and media art, image theories, documentation and expanded documentary, visual ethnography, experimental imaging and socially engaged art practices.
