PhD Research Funded Studentship: Visual Culture

'What is representation and how does visual culture exist as forms of representation?

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship from exceptionally well qualified students who want to embark on a full-time research degree programme commencing in Autumn Term 2013.

From Kant to Derrida, questions concerning the possibility and nature of representation and the relations between the various conceptual and visual forms it takes have been central to much European philosophy. The disciplines comprising cultural studies and visual culture, along with art and design theory have recently been taking more interest in those questions. The present proposal is to enable PhD level study into those European traditions and to use them to investigate the ways in which visual culture may be explained in their terms.

A suitably qualified student is required to explore the question what is representation and begin to explain how visual culture exists as different forms of representation. The PhD should address a range of questions, themes and concepts, including but not limited to those presented here:

• The conditions and limits of representation; what makes representation in and as visual culture possible and impossible

• Visual culture as forms of representation; what is represented in and by visual culture; identity, the body, the other

• How visual culture can operate as representation and whether there is anything apart from representation

• Visual culture as enacting and picturing the conditions and nature of representation

• Visual culture and perception as techne: conditions for both

• Visual culture as trace, memory and archive.

As a research student you will become involved in leading edge research, and provided with research skills training and support from internationally recognised academics.

Each studentship is valued at £13,726 plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. Applicants must be eligible to pay tuition fees at UK/EU rates. The full-time research degree programme will commencing in the Autumn Term 2013. The deadline for applications is 13th May 2013.
