On Saturday 22 June 2013 at 17.00 the 12th Fellbach Triennial of Small Scale Sculpture will be opened. Innovative and rich in tradition, the exhibition has taken place since 1980. Initially conceived as a show of nationally produced art, it rapidly acquired European and global dimensions. Meanwhile, it has established itself as the major recurring exhibition of contemporary sculpture in South Germany with an international reputation. The venue is the imposing Alte Kelter with its 2,500 square metres of exhibition space.
Yilmaz Dziewior and Angelika Nollert are the curators of the 12th Triennial. This is the first time in the long history of the exhibition that a duo has taken on responsibility for the exhibition conception and the choice of artists. Since 2009 Yilmaz Dziewior has been the Director of the Kunsthaus Bregenz which plays an eminent role in the international world of art. Since 2007 Angelika Nollert has been the Director of the New Museum – State Museum for Art and Design, Nuremberg. With its innovative exhibition formats at the crossover between art and design this institution is also one of the major museums of contemporary art.
The title of this year's Triennial is UTOPIE BEGINNT IM KLEINEN / UTOPIA STARTS SMALL. How are utopias articulated in the small format, in designs and experiments? What new answers do artists come up with in terms of visions for life? What effect did the seminal year of 1989, the demise of the socialist states, have on ideologies and utopias? How does a generation of artists for whom these events have long since become history position itself? The exhibition investigates these and other questions. Furthermore, aside from the visual arts, it explores exemplary approaches in architecture, theatre and design. Some 55 artists of all generations will be participating, including Luis Camnitzer, Nathan Coley, Meschac Gaba, Carlos Garaicoa, Konstantin Grcic, Maria Eichhorn, Erwin Piscator, Eckhard Schulze-Fielitz, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Danh Võ and Haegue Yang.
The exhibition is supported by the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg and the German Federal Cultural Foundation, by the WGV Insurance Foundation, the Sparkasse Finance Group, the Kreissparkasse Waiblingen Foundation, Assoziation Bergmann, the Stadtwerke Fellbach GmbH and the Fellbach Small Scale Sculpture Triennial Friends Association.
