New Orleans Art Biennial Prospect.3 Opens October 25

About Prospect New Orleans
Prospect New Orleans is an international arts biennial event that will take place from October 25, 2014 through January 25, 2015. 'Prospect.3: Notes for Now' will present the work of more than 50 artists selected by Artistic Director Franklin Sirmans, in more than 15 locations, including museums, community centers and independent sites throughout neighborhoods across New Orleans. Prospect.3 is made possible by our generous supporters that include: National Endowment for the Arts, the Lambent Foundation Fund of Tides Foundation, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc., The Joan Mitchell Foundation, Whitney Bank, the Collins C. Diboll Private Foundation, Jones Walker, RosaMary Foundation, a Community Arts Grant made possible by the City of New Orleans as administered by the Arts Council of New Orleans, and many others.

Friday, October 24
7:30pm -10:30pm Miss Vesta's Swamp Galaxy Gala, A Benefit Party for Prospect.3, Contemporary Arts Center, 900 Camp Street. The event will feature cocktails, dinner and dancing at the Contemporary Arts Center. The benefit will celebrate the opening of the biennial's third iteration, 'Prospect.3: Notes for Now,' which will take place from October 25, 2014 through January 25, 2015. The exhibition will present the work of more than 50 artists selected by Artistic Director Franklin Sirmans, in more than 15 locations throughout neighborhoods across New Orleans. Saturday, October 25
11:00am -6:00pm Prospect.3 Notes for Now exhibits open to the public

11:00am Prospect.3 opens to the public with a Ribbon Cutting at Louis Armstrong Park, 835 N. Rampart Street, followed by a second line parade to the New Orleans African American Museum of Art, Culture, and History, 1418 Governor Nicholls Street.
A second line is a traditional brass band parade in New Orleans where the crowd follows along, sometimes twirling parasols or handkerchiefs in the air.

Zahourie Abdalian is featured at the New Orleans African American Museum of Art, Culture and History.

2:00pm Performance by P.3 Artist Andrea Fraser at the New Orleans Museum of Art, City Park, 1 Collins Diboll Circle
New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), New Orleans' oldest fine arts institution, opened on December 16, 1911 with only 9 works of art. Today, the museum hosts an impressive permanent collection of almost 40,000 objects. The collection, noted for its extraordinary strengths in French and American art, photography, glass, and African and Japanese works, continues to expand and grow, making NOMA one of the top art museums in the south. noma.org

Tarsila do Amaral, Frederick J. Brown, Huguette Caland, Ed Clark, Andrea Fraser, Paul Gauguin, Jeffrey Gibson and Alma Thomas are featured at the New Orleans Museum of Art.

4:00pm -6:00pm Reception at The George & Leah McKenna Museum of African-American Art, 2003 Carondelet Street
The George & Leah McKenna Museum of African American Art is an institution that collects, interprets and preserves the visual aesthetic of people of African descent in North America and beyond. Through innovative programs and exhibits that engage versatile audiences, the McKenna Museum seeks to make African Diasporan fine art accessible to visitors of all ages. Carrie Mae Weems is featured at the George & Leah McKenna Museum of African American Art.

6:00pm -9:00pm St. Claude Arts District Block Party, along the St. Claude corridor and neighborhood
Inspired by their post-Katrina Toxic Art Exhibit at l'art Noir New Orleans, Jeffrey Holmes and Andrea Garland founded the St. Claude Arts District in October, 2005, along with the two other existing galleries on St. Claude Avenue - the Farrington Smith Gallery and Barrister's Gallery. While l'art Noir New Orleans and Farrington-Smith Galleries are now defunct, over the ensuing years numerous galleries and other arts related venues have sprung up along the St. Claude corridor. The St. Claude Arts District, one of the fastest growing underground arts scenes in the country, is now home to over thirty venues with coordinated gallery openings on the 2nd Saturday of each month and many other events during the month. scadnola.com

6:00pm -11:00pm Opening Reception for P.3 artist Tameka Norris presenting her feature-length film Meka Jean: How She Got Good, May Gallery and Residency, 2839 North Robertson Street, Suite 105
Meka Jean: How She Got Good follows a semi-autobiographical protagonist as she struggles to define herself in relation to her surroundings. Located in the Upper 9th Ward of New Orleans in a former beer brewery since 2012, May Gallery and Residency exhibits exceptional international contemporary art and concurrently provides educational public programming to New Orleans and south eastern U.S. May's educational programing teaches critical thought through public discussions, publishing, exhibitions and by actively integrating international resident-artists into the surrounding communities. themayspace.com
