How to teach and assess arts? Find out at Eksperimenta! and IDEAlaboratory!
The international youth contemporary art triennial Eksperimenta! returns to Tallinn for the second time to explore the topic of Art and Science from 23rd October to 23rd November. Together with the opening of the exhibition the Eksperimenta! team invites education and art professionals to the IDEAlaboratory to explore the Art of Teaching and Art of Assessment on 24th and 25th October.
Eksperimenta! presents artworks by young artists aged 14 to 19 from 11 countries in Tallinn's oldest church – St. Catherine's and in the medieval merchant's house Hopner House on the Town Hall Square. The nearly 800-year-old church as a venue for artwork by the very young artists presents a challenge and contrast but also proves that the Old Town is still very much alive and open for new brave ideas and free thinking.
Eduko IDEAlaboratory conference on art of education and art of assessment in creative subjects takes place from 24th to 25th October. Presentations and workshops will present experiences from Brazil to Portugal and Russia covering a wide area from theoretical questions of contemporary art education to practical workshops.
The first day of the conference, 24th October is dedicated to art didactics or the art of teaching. Nina Ostan from the National Education Institute, Slovenia, the winner of last Eksperimenta!'s curator prize, presents understanding and creating contemporary art at school and holds a practical performance workshop; Sepake Angiama, Head of Education and Audience Development for Manifesta 10, held in St. Petersburg, shows how to use contemporary art in a difficult political situation to urge young people to think; the curator of Canadian expo Professor Peter Vietgen from the Brock University presents the development of critical and creative thinking as a goal of Canadian High School Visual Arts Programs; the representative of ABLV Charitable Foundation from Riga will present Contemporary Solutions for Contemporary Art. Edna Vahter from Tallinn University and Annely Köster from Sally Studio will share best practices from Estonia.
The second day, 25th October is dealing with the difficult and controversial topic of assessment in creative subjects. InSea Lead Committee member Teresa Eca from Portugal will present portfolio as an assessment method that supports learning; professor Tomaz Zupancic from Maribor University holds a practical assessment workshop within the Eksperimenta! exposition. Maria Jürimäe will share Estonian experience with assessment that supports learning. Professor James Elkins will focus on assessment in arts and art education and will close the conference.
