concept
The art project springhouse is an annual residency, exhibition and festival which takes place in Dresden for the fourth time. Artists are invited for one week to live in a six level office building in order to transform the house into a temporary space for the arts.
Artists of all branches (painting, sculpture, performing arts, music etc.) have the chance to relate to a working space and to explore the interchange between the arts and daily life by means of their artistic interventions. Thereby they turn the house into a laboratory for work processes, into a stage and a show room for contemporary art.
By relating to this inhabited building the artists blur the boundaries between art object and daily device. Such the artists in residence and their visitors are exposed to the tension between working, living and creating thus gaining new insights into the interrelationship of those different spheres.


The project is scheduled in a week and three different stages:
1.) May 18th – 22nd
RESIDENCY
Arrival / Working production period / Dialogue and exchange between artists, workers and professionals / Time for reflexion and experiments

2.) May 22nd, 7pm - May 24th
EXHIBITION / FESTIVAL
Exhibition opening / Results of the working period will be presented to the public / Concerts and framing programme

participation
Up to March 21st, 2014, visual artists, musicians, performers and writers may send in their proposal: Decisions who may participate will be made not later than March 30th, 2014.
It's important to take into consideration a formal or conceptional approach to the city of Dresden, the building and/or the historical context of the neighbourhood and to develop a specific question related to the own artistic practice.
Participating artists are cordially invited to live in the artist residence at Tannenstr. 2. We provide you with food. Expenses for traveling and material are covered until a certain amount.
Please hand in a proposal plus curriculum vitae – if possible with concept lines of the project (250 words max.) or a music sample until March 21th, 2014. Proposals are only accepted in digital form via email to info@spring-house.de

Tannenstraße 2 in Dresden was one of the five centres for industrial architecture planning during the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) (VEB Combined forces for Construction and Installation South, Centre for Industrial Projects, Dresden). Since 1964 the centre was under the control of the GDR state secretary for construction. The state combine was designed to secure important investments by the industry as the main initiator for constructions in the regions of Leipzig and Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz) .The Glass factory in Torgau, the centre for the fair in Brühl or open-cast mining in Leipzig had been planned there. In those days more than 300 persons had been working in Tannenstrasse 2. There was a restaurant for all staff members, a gatekeeper and a huge parking lot for bicycles. When GDR ended in 1990 the centre was transformed into Centre for construction and Installation AG Leipzig. The building Tannerstrasse 2 was handed over to the Treuhand. Finally in 1991 the Bavarian Hörmann Holding purchased it. It was converted into the beginnings of DAI-Plan (Dresden office centre for architecture and engineering). With the decrease of DAI Plan projects, the different offices shrank in size and some of the office units were handed over to other types of business. Today the building is rented out to different users, each office applying 10 to 30 people.

Tannerstrasse 2 is a six-floor building. Staircases and an elevator connect the levels. On each floor there is a small kitchen for tea and coffee and two toilets. Wide corridors lead to the office units. The handrails in the staircase from the 1990s show an impressive red colour. In addition there are a spacious entrance lobby and two conference rooms. On the 4th floor there is an strongroom hidden behind a baffle wall made out of plastic.
The different office units are rented out to different users, among others two offices for architecture, an office for landscape planning, a real estate manager, a construction firm, a company producing movies for cinema and television, a travel agency, a print company, an office for software development and a language training centre. Most of the office units are adaptable for installations and interventions.
On the outside there are several garages out of use and a spacious bicycle parking lot with a all spanning roof which might be use e.g. for an open air cinema. Also the small gatekeeper house could be reactivated for the exhibition,
The decision concerning the arrangement of installations and the pieces of art lies by the curators in consent with the owners of the office units.
