How to tell a story? Aspects of this question will be discussed and practised in four of the 21 courses at this year's Summer Academy programme.

Paolo Woods is convinced that photography has a language of its own. This means that to photograph successfully you have to learn and master this language – its vocabulary and grammar, of course, and its history, inevitably. But more than ever today, any photographic work becomes interesting and necessary if the images are charged with a narrative. In this course you will learn how to look for stories and how to narrate them.
Duration: 21 July–2 August 2014
Fee: € 680.- (reduced: € 520.-)
Details

In Sarnath Banerjee's course, you will learn how to construct the special 'third meaning' of a story that emerges between text and image when these are combined. Normally, text and images produce their individual meaning in different ways, but together – as in comics and graphic novels – they create meanings that neither can achieve alone.
Duration: 4–16 August 2014
Fee: € 680.- (reduced: € 520.-)
Details

cinéma copains (Arne Hector/Minze Tummescheit)
will work with analogue film material. The filmed material will be developed manually in the dark-room. In the ensuing montage the emphasis will be on the relation between image and sound. This will not be a purely formal exercise, however; film will be understood as a means of communication, and used for personal or political narratives.
Duration: 4–16 August 2014
Fee: € 680.- (reduced: € 520.-)
Details

Felix Gmelin's
course is about storytelling – about how to express dreams, memories, fairytales and subjective experiences. It aims to develop your stories and help you to articulate them, taking into consideration how they relate to your chosen medium and language.
Duration: 11–30 August 2014
Fee: € 920.- (reduced: € 680.-)
