Ante Timmermans
«Ordem do Progresso»
Vernissage:
Friday 13 June 2014, 7pm
Exhibition through 12 July 2014
Ante Timmermans (*1976 Ninove, Belgium) is one of the most prominent artists working with drawings in the contemporary art scene. Reflecting on the absurdity of everyday life, the daily routine, its repetition, bureaucracy, monotony of labor, the role of entertainment, our ennui and boredom, Timmerman's work is both poetically ironic and disenchanted.
The artist is interested in revealing hidden systems, such as the social ones – like cities, politics, mechanisms of control and surveillance – or those used as instruments to control our ways of thinking, such as the pregnancy of language and words in our lives. Circles, the infinity symbol, official stamps, mules and people transforming into these animals of burden, are all symbols which repeat throughout his work, and are re-contextualized to create new associations in which humor plays an important role.
His works originate mostly as black and white drawings, made with very simple techniques, and then are also transferred into three-dimensional installations, making use of drawing vocabulary and alluding to the lines of a drawing. These sculptures and installations employ obsolete technology, such as tape recorders, overhead projectors, etc, questioning technological progress and trying to create a way for people to slow down, and discover them step-by-step, not understanding everything immediately.
For the project Ordem do Progresso, at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo – his first solo show in Brazil, which ends the Social Critique cycle of the project LX92 – Ante Timmermans will create new works during his short residency in the city, allowing the local context to play an important role in the exhibition outcome.

About LX92
Launched in 2013, the project LX92 consists of a series of exhibitions of foreign artists at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo, and aims to create an international dialogue between São Paulo and Europe, specially Switzerland, expanding the local art scene for the ideas that are being discussed in those countries and promoting European artists. In exchange, artists who have their shows at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo can experience the contact with the Brazilian culture while installing their works, which most of the times are developed for the space exclusively. The project title is a reference to the direct flight that connects Zurich to Sao Paulo.
