Open Call : Summer Workshop | 8th-13th September Barcelona

LO INFORME is a week long course with the aim of providing a platform for co-learning and tuition, where Halfhouse becomes a kind of retreat for the exchange of ideas, presentations and workshops delivered by artists and curators whose practice is extra- disciplinary to develop projects which question the limits imposed on knowledge by modern epistemology.

LO INFORME, as a learning experience, seeks to explore the possibility of generating material and immaterial forms which make up the cognitive, expressive and emotional experience of art. Throughout the week we will attempt to contextualize diverse practices and show how investigations are formulated, not as ways of unfolding information but as strategies to give shape to investigation, activating methodology and giving agency to materiality. The workshop seeks to rethink form as active, as a series of complex and changing relationships where objects are not subordinate to subjects but, by means of interaction, objects subject themselves and behave differently.


WORKSHOPS


SEAN LYNCH

Lynch will give a series of presentations and debates around the issue of public reactions to art in Ireland (conservatism, vandalism etc) and in Barcelona, using A Rocky Road , an exhibition curated by Lynch in 2011-2012 as a starting point. Lynch will also discuss recent projects A blow by blow account of Stonecarving in Oxford and Delorean Progress Report in which Lynch investigates particular or ignored historic moments which have left a narrative footprint.

Sean Lynch explores marginal histories through photographic installations and sculptures, ready made or found objects and small publications. He studied art in the Frankfurt Stadelschule . His most recent project : A blow by bow account of stonecarving in Oxford was shown at The Hugh Lane, Dublin city Gallery and at modern Art Oxford (2013-2014) . He has also exhibited in VISUAL, Carlow; Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, Dublin; Catalyst Arts , Belfast; Project Space, Frankfurter Kunstverein among others. In 2015 he will represent Ireland in the Venice Biennale.


FRANÇOIS BUCHER Y LINA LÓPEZ

This workshop will work from a body of recent colaborative work in which various interconnected themes are explored such as the dynamic of the whole and it's parts through a magic science of the irreducible ( The duraction of the present, notes on frequency), the contemporary occult in Mexico (Totems of fractal access) and the radio as a transmitter of sound waves but also of ancient knowledge (The Amazon Radio). This series of work is organised around the exploration of the duration of the present, a field of study developed by the mexican scientist Jacabo Grinberg Zylberbaum who disappeared in mysterious circumstances in 1994.

François Bucher is a Columbian artist who lives and works in Berlin and Paris. Bucher studied cinema in the School of the art institute of Chicago and participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program of New York. His work expands a wide range of interests and media and has been exhibited internationally in Biennales in Venice, Lyon, Prague, Thessalonica and Cuenca among others. He has participated in festivals such as Oberhausen Film Festival, Rotterdam Film Festival, New York Video Festival at the Lincoln Centre and in exhibitions in the PROA Foundation, Tate Britain, Argos Arts and Haus der Kuturen der Welt amonst many more. Besides, Bucher colaborates as a writer in various theory books and magazines like Saving the Image, Art after Film, The journal of Visual Culture, Estudios Visuales, E-flux journal and Valdez.

Lina López is a Columbian-French industrial designer specialising in museology and Is professor of Contemporary Art and Exhibition at the Sorbonne. Since 2001 she has been working as museographer in the Musée du Luxembourg (France) and as an independent curator. She has implemented two projects in the Palais de Tokyo. Between 2011 and 2013 she was in charge of the reorganisation (curatorship, design,and coordination of a group of archaeologists) of three branches of the National Museum of Georgia. She is currently developing a curatorial project on shared mythologies and another on gold in the old and new continents. She is colaborating with François Bucher on two projects; The duration of the present (notes on Frequency) Seville, 2014 and The World was Flat, now it's Round and it will be a Hologram, Umea, 2015


CATALINA LOZANO Y JORGE SATORRE


Lozano and Satorre will explore reaccurent notions in their colaborative work and in their independent practices as curator and artist respectively. The workshop wil be centred on the use of scale in contemporary historiography, contextualizing the conversation through the work of others and external references.

Catalina Lozano is an independent curator who trained as an historian in The National University of Colombia , studied a Masters in visual culture in Goldsmiths college, London and in social sciences at the École des Hautes Études, âris- She is mainly interested in historical investigation through art and minor stories in the contemporary revision of the dominant historical narratives. She is part of the Berlin Biennale curatorial team(2014). Recent projects include A Machine wants instruction like a garden wants discipline, MARCO, Vigo, Spain, FRAC Lorraine, Alhóndiga Bilbao (2013-2014), Being an Island, daadgalerie, Berlin (2013) The door to the invisible should be visible, Casa del Lago, México D.F.(2012), No mans land?, Centro Cultural Montehermoso, Vitoria-Gasteiz (2011); and Everything has a name, or the potential to be named (with Anna Colin), Gasworks, London (2009). Between 2008 and 2010 she was responsible for the residency program at Gasworks, London (2009). She is co-founder of de_sitio, a project platform in Mexico City.

A reaccurrent theme in the work of Jorge Satorre is the notion of circularity applied to historiographic studies, understanding this as the neccessity for a continuous exchange of scales in the point of view, analysing details, isolated or apparently anomalous cases in the historical framework to be compared with the general or hegemonic versions. His work has recently been presented in individual shows in Artspace, Auckland, New Zealand (2013); Le Grand Café, st-Nazaire; FormContent, Londres; Centro Cultural Montehermoso, Vitoria; galería Labor, México (2010, 2014). the Recent group shows he has exhibited work in include: A Machine wants instruction like a garden wants discipline, MARCO, Vigo, Spain/ Frac Lorraine. Metz/Alhóndiga Bilbao. (2013/­14); Les Ateliers. Biennale d'Art Contemporain de Rennes (2012); L'Homme de Vitruve. Le Crédac. Ivry. (2012); Robert Smithson in Emmen ­ Broken Circle/Spiral Hill Revisited, CBK, Emmen (2011); The circulating actions of things, Bard College, New York (2011); Portscapes, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2010).


LEIRE VERGARA

Leire Vergara's workshop develops a form which will be generated as it is discussed. The workshop will be like a film about a workshop about a film which forms part of a series of discursive experiments that Vergara develops in the frame of her PHD in Curatorial/Knowledge at Goldsmiths College.

Leire Vergara is an independent curator . She has formed part of Bulegoa Zenbaki Barik since 2010. From 2006 to 2009 she has worked as a curator-director in Sala Rekalde. From 2002 to 2005 she co-ran the production structure D.A.E (Donostiako Arte Ekinbideak) in Donostia-San Sebastian with Peio Aguirre. She is currently doing a PHD program in Curatorial/knowledge in the department of Visual Culture in Goldsmiths College, University of London and in the department of Audiovisual Communication at the University of the Basque Country.



Application Procedure:
Open to applicants from all fields....artists, curators, historians etc . Workshops will be in Spanish and English, a command of each language is necessary. To participate in the workshop you should send the application form (en.halfhouse.org/summer-workshop.html) along with a photocopy of a valid form of identification, a brief cv, some images of your work or links to website and a letter of motivation (approx. 300 words). The application should be sent to info@halfhouse.org with 'workshop' as the subject by the 11th of August.


Selection
The application process will be carried out by Catalina Lozano, Jorge Satorre and Halfhouse. A maximum of 20 participants will be selected. Results of the selection process will be sent by e-mail to all applicants by the 15th of August.


Registration
The fee for participation is €80 which should be paid to Halfhouse on receipt of confirmation of acceptance to the workshop. Halfhouse members recieve a 50% discount.
Halfhouse will organise appetizers, aperitifs, one of the lunches, a barbecue and drinks during the workshop, It's up to the participants to arrange the rest of their lunches.
Halfhouse are happy to help finding accommodation for participants coming from abroad.
