Wolf Kahlen, an outstanding artist, an intermedia pioneer and performer, creator of conceptual photographs, film and video recordings, media installations and sculptures celebrates his 75th birthday on the 7th of January.
As one of the most important initiators of the artistic exchange between Polish and German artists, Wolf Kahlen has taken part in artistic activities in Poland since the early 70s. From the year 1990 he's a regular participant of the WRO Media Art Biennale in Wrocław. His then exhibited site-specific sound sculpture, Breslauer Tisch, has been added to the collection of the National Museum in Wrocław.
In 2010 WRO Art Center presented his retrospective exhibition, Wolf Kahlen Video Tapes 1969-2010, prepared for the artist's 70th birthday in cooperation with Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie ZKM Karlsruhe, Folkwang Museum Essen, and Ruine der Künste Berlin.
Noli me Videre (1976), Wolf Kahlen's media performance utilizing a video camera and a monitor connected in a closed circuit, was first of such kind carried out in Poland (Labyrinth Gallery, Lublin). The recording of the event from the collection of the Lower Silesian Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts is currently being shown as a part of the in progress exhibition in the Wrocław Contemporary Museum.
In 2014 the artist entrusted the WRO Art Center with an entire collection of his 164 video works dated from 1969 to 2014, with the intention of their permanent exposition in Wrocław.
We wish the artist the very best for his birthday. At the same time we're pleased to announce the premiere presentation of Wolf Kahlen's complete video works during the 16th WRO Media Art Biennale, the major forum for new media art in Poland, and one of the major international art events in Central Europe, taking place in Wrocław since May 13th 2015 under the title Test Exposure.
Co-funded by the Wrocław Municipality and the Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage.
