The MFA Art Practice program at the School of Visual Arts offers a low-residency, interdisciplinary approach to an MFA degree. A carefully selected, small group of candidates comes together at SVA's NYC campus for three successive, intensive summer residency periods where they have the opportunity to work closely with established artists, designers, writers, critics and curators, including: David A. Ross (Chair), Suzanne Anker, Alice Aycock, Beth B, Dara Birnbaum, Kathy Brew, Eric and Heather ChanSchatz, Ben Davis, E.V. Day, Lia Gangitano, Laura F. Gibellini, Thyrza Nichols Goodeve, Johan Grimonprez, Lyle Ashton Harris, Daniel Kunitz, Alix Lambert, Steven Henry Madoff, Izhar Patkin, Ernesto Pujol, Alexis Rockman, Tim Rollins, Sarah G. Sharp, Gary Simmons, Stefan Saffer, Jovana Stokic, Mark Tribe, Carrie Mae Weems and Robin Winters.
Facilities include a digital sculpture center, a bio-art lab and video and sound editing facilities in addition to a wood shop, metals shop, ceramics studio and fibers lab. In the intervening fall and spring semesters, participants engage in required, interactive, rich-media online coursework from all over the world.
MFA Art Practice aims to create a global community of artists who feel secure in their ability to produce works of art using traditional and nontraditional media in both traditional and nontraditional settings. Successful applicants will join a multidisciplinary assemblage of artists, curators, writers and thinkers.
Participants and alumni from the program have shown at prestigious institutions and events, including MoMA PS1; Queens Museum; The Museum of the Moving Image; Corcoran Gallery of Art, D.C.; Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City; Tate Modern, London; Witte de With, Rotterdam; The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul; The Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art; Gl Hotegaard Museum, Denmark; The Living Art Museum, Reykjavik; The Moscow Museum of Modern Art; The Venice Biennale; The New Museum's Festival of Ideas; and Art Basel Miami.
