Open Call for Young Artists XXI CSAV – Artists Research Laboratory

CSAV – Artists Research Laboratory is a project where dialogue and exchange among artists of different generations and nationalities stand at the heart of a unique artistic and learning experience. The lab is open to sixteen young artists of all nationalities, selected among the applicants by a jury. The program lasts twenty-five days during which the participants attend a daily workshop activity and theoretical seminars run by the invited artist, the director, the curator and guest lecturers, as well as conferences held by artists, critics and experts of other disciplines.

The XXI edition of the laboratory, entitled Materials For Performance will be held in Como from the 6th to the 31st of July 2015. Yvonne Rainer will be leading the workshop during its first part and Andrea Kleine during its second one.

'Using body, voice, objects, we shall attempt to extrapolate and combine performative fragments from theoretical and literary texts, videos, autobiography, environmental observations, news reports, and from interactions between and among participants in the workshop itself.' (Yvonne Rainer)

'I would like the workshop to be a laboratory where young artists explore performative themes and techniques, combined with their own art practice, and how all of that relates to Yvonne's ideas. We will travel through the techniques of other artists - working with repetition, radical juxtaposition, everyday observation, autobiographical appropriation, emotional states, narrative structures and anti-structures - and find our way back to our own work.' The laboratory is free of charge. Accommodation expenses in Como are to be covered by the participants.

Yvonne Rainer
Yvonne Rainer, a co-founding member of the Judson Dance Theater in 1962, made a transition to filmmaking following a fifteen-year career as a choreographer/dancer (1960-1975). After making seven experimental feature films — Lives of Performers (1972), Privilege (1990), MURDER and murder (1996), among others — she returned to dance in 2000 via a commission from the Baryshnikov Dance Foundation for the White Oak Dance Project (After Many a Summer Dies the Swan). Her dances since then include AG Indexical, with a little help from H.M., RoS Indexical, a Performa07 commission, Spiraling Down, Assisted Living: Good Sports 2, and Assisted Living: Do you have any money?.

Her dances and films have been shown worldwide, and her work has been rewarded with museum exhibitions, fellowships, and grants, most notably two Guggenheim Fellowships, two Rockefeller grants, a Wexner Prize, a MacArthur Fellowship, and retrospective exhibitions at Kunsthaus Bregenz and Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2012), the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles and Raven Row, London (2014).
A memoir — Feelings Are Facts: a Life — was published by MIT Press in 2006. A selection of her poetry was published in 2011 by Paul Chan's Badlands Unlimited.

Andrea Kleine
Andrea Kleine is a writer and performance artist whose work has spanned dance, theater, film, literature, and interdisciplinary projects. She has received numerous commissions, grants, and awards including five MacDowell Colony fellowships and the NYFA fellowship award. Her latest performance work, SCREENING ROOM, premiered in December 2014 at The Chocolate Factory Theater in New York City. Her novel, CALF, will be published by Counterpoint/Soft Skull in fall 2015.
