The renowned Belgian artist Marcel Berlanger (°1965, lives and works in Brussels) inscribes his paintings on glass fibre in a three dimensional space and a variety of different media. Built upon strong pictorial oppositions and intense tensions between the figure and the content, CATALYST reveals the diffracted status of the figure, which is trapped in the net of the contemporary picture, by giving birth to it and making it appear or disappear like in a whirl. And thus exposing its socio-political critique.
Invited artist Adrien Lucca (°1983, lives and works in Brussels) about his work: 'I am interested – but not only – in the question of how it would be possible, through a series of precise physical and colorimetrical measures in a controlled environment, to install a 'software' that has a direct effect onto the visitor's field of vision.'
CATALYST is the second part of an exhibition cycle that questions the apparition of the figure in the artist's work in 4 propositions and a joint publication: Emergent (Veurne, 2014), ikob (Fall 2015), Galerie Rodolphe Janssen (Brussels, 2016) and BPS 22 (Charleroi, 2017).
