Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute Artists-in-Residence Program 2016/17

Applications for 2016/17 residencies are being accepted in COMMUNICATIONS DESIGN (ie: GRAPHIC DESIGN, ILLUSTRATION) and VIDEO ART.

Applications for the 2016 Artist Studio Program opens now and the deadline is March 10, 2016, Midnight EST.

The Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute School of Art Artists-in-Residence Program consists of two emerging artists from different disciplines recruited via an open call to live and work on the MWPAI/PrattMWP campus in Utica, NY for one academic year.

The program is designed for emerging artists and/or recent MFA graduates in the visual arts to gain teaching experience within the School of Art's non-credit program while developing their studio practice. Artists receive support for these endeavors by being provided with housing, studio, meals, professional opportunities, and financial support. MWPAI and the surrounding community gain creatively from interactions with resident artists. AIR's are an energizing and crucial component of creative life on campus.

Disciplines rotate each academic year. An artist-in-residence could be accepted in two of the following media in future calls: Painting/Drawing, Ceramics, Jewelry/Metals, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Communications Design, and Video. Please check back each year.

MWPAI is calling for two artists that would benefit from focused studio time and an interest in teaching; Video Artists and Communications Design Artists (ie: Graphic Design, Illustration) working in a studio environment. Graphic artist applicants whose work experiments with or bridges design and fine art are encouraged.

THE RESIDENCY:
-Residency is nine months.
-August 22, 2016 through May 22, 2017.
-Two artists working in different media are in residence simultaneously.
-Call for artists rotates through disciplines each academic year.
-Artists receive two stipend payments of $1,250 in September and in January for a total of $2,500
-Fall and Winter session non-credit teaching opportunities in our Community Arts Education program; paid compensation as an Community Arts Education Instructor and subject to enrollment guidelines.
-Second floor studio space in the Tracy Street Studio building.
-Joint spring exhibition, artist talk, winter open studio and promotion for these events.
-Furnished two-bedroom apartment with shared living and kitchen in the heart of the MWPAI campus.
-Cafeteria meal plan. (19 meals per week while college program is in session)

ARTIST RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Develop own work and studio practice in the provided studio space.
-Work with the Community Arts Ed Coordinator and department prior to arriving to develop non-credit classes and workshops to teach in your field.
-Present a joint exhibition, lecture, and open studio participation during residency.
-Three hours a week of community arts involvement at the institute or off campus.
-Up to eight hours of weekly involvement with full-time PrattMWP faculty in your discipline.
-Artists must provide own materials or specialized equipment for own studio practice.
-Transportation to and during residency.
-Any additional costs of living.

STIPEND, PAY, AND FEES
Residency application is free. Submission of applications are only accepted online through mwpai.submittable.com/submit/49084. Finalists invited for an onsite visit prior to accepting residency may be compensated for travel. Artists-in-residence receive two stipend payments of $1,250 in September and in January for a total of $2,500. Artists teaching non-credit classes and/or workshops in our Community Arts Education program will be paid compensation as an Community Arts Education Instructor. Classes are subject to enrollment guidelines. MWPAI provides housing and utilities, studio, and a meal plan that covers 19 meals a week during PrattMWP semester. MWPAI is not responsible for artist's transportation to and during residency or additional costs of living.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY:
The 2016/2017 disciplines are Video Arts and Communications Design (ie: Graphic Design, Illustration). Design applicants may have MFA or equivalent professional experience. Video Art applicants are MFA preferred. Applicants may not be enrolled in any degree program at time of residency. Disciplines rotate each academic year.

International artists, please take the following into consideration: International artists are responsible for obtaining a visa, as well as necessary documentation for travel and employment within the United States. MWPAI can provide formal letters of invitation and additional support information requested, however it is the artist's responsibility to carry the burden of the visa acquisition process through the appropriate channels. Please consider the timeline for making such arrangements. Artists must be reasonably fluent in English.

SELECTION PROCESS:
A panel consisting of the Dean, Full-time Faculty, and Community Art Ed Coordinator will review applications and select artists for the 2016/17 season. Artists will be selected based on the quality of their work and their potential for making the most of their time in the program. Finalists will be interviewed and/or invited to visit MWPAI before accepting residency. All applicants will be notified by email. Please do not call the office for selection results.

Utica is less than one hour from the Adirondack Park, the nation's largest state park, and home to the state's famous 'High Peaks' region. Among the facilities is the Studio Building, which includes seven art studios and an art gallery, and is bordered by an outdoor sculpture court. Complementing the Studio Building are five architecturally diverse buildings that have been restored to accommodate our students.
