Job Summary
Under the direct guidance of the EMPAC Director, the Curator for Theater and Dance develops, implements and manages EMPAC programs in the field of contemporary performance. Position will be filled at the Assistant or Associate Curator level
Minimum Qualifications
All Candidates:
Candidates at any level must possess a Bachelor's degree in theater, dance, choreography or other related field, along with curatorial and/or artistic experience on the national and international level of contemporary artistic developments in the field of contemporary dance.
All candidates must demonstrate a solid intellectual, aesthetic and historical understanding of current directions of theater and dance both on and off stage, and experience with the production of dance and/or theater is required. Additionally, knowledge of and experience with digital technology as an interactive and algorithmic tool in the context of performing arts is required (beyond 'video projection using live camera feeds').
Assistant Curator:
Candidates whose experiences are primarily internships, performances, or in a support position will be considered at the Assistant Curator level.
Associate Curator: Individuals who possess direct curatorial experience will be considered at the Associate Curator level.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in theater, dance, choreography and/or related technologies; or equivalent.
- Experience in Arts Administration
- Experience may include as a performer, or an unpaid intern, or in a support position that handled different aspects of staging performances (stage management, lighting, set design) or preferably in project management of new productions.
- Expandable basis of knowledge in computer technology in artistic productions
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of contemporary artistic developments/performance with national and international perspective.
• Knowledge of aesthetical and practical implications of digital technology in contemporary performance.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet established goals and objectives
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team
• Ability to work in fast paced, rapidly changing environment
• Demonstrated problem solving and project management skills
• Ability to understand Department, Division and Institute wide goals, and to apply these goals to the duties and responsibilities of the position
• Ability to oversee the tracking of project progress and costs
• Attention to detail and organizational skills
• Planning and effective time management skills.
• Ability to anticipate and solve problems.
Other Position Requirements
General work conditions in a performance space, may require lifting, use of tools, reading, use of computers. On campus, national and international travel is required. Stressful at times, demanding, fast paced workplace. Frequently required to stand, sit and walk. May require extended hours during peak times, including evenings, nights and weekends.
