Sound and Music, the national charity for new music, is offering a residency opportunity to work with BBC Radio 3 on a project called Embedded: BBC Radio 3's Composer in 3. The programme aims to:
• Demystify the nature and processes of contemporary classical music
• Familiarise Radio 3 listeners with the sounds and ideas that characterise it
• Champion new music as a natural and enjoyable part of the broadcast listening experience
The chosen candidate will begin work at the BBC in June 2016 for 10 days, followed by the core Embedded period of September – December 2016. During this 70 day period, the composer will have the opportunity to create regular short form works for frequent broadcast as part of the celebrations of the 70th Anniversary of the Third Programme.
The opportunity allows the Composer in 3 to work with Radio 3's programme makers to compose pieces that introduce the station's audience to a diverse range of new music. In addition to having regular access to the BBC studios and technical staff at Broadcasting House in London, plus access by arrangement to the BBC Performing Groups across the UK, the composer will also be able to suggest performers they would like to work with during the project.
This opportunity would be best suited to a composer who understands and is fascinated by the medium of radio and what it means to create pieces which work effectively for broadcast. The selected artist will need to be confident in communicating about their work, and happy to talk on the radio about the creative process and about new music in general. Specifically, you will be passionate about connecting audiences with new music.
Deadline for applications: Noon, Thursday 5th May
