Topophilia is a group exhibition that addresses different aspects of domestic life from different parts of the world through video and installation. Topophilia will take place in the Nørager Farmhouse in Nees, Denmark, as part of the MEETINGS Festival in September 2017.
Nøragervej 38 is a large farmhouse in Nees, Denmark, a small agricultural village in Western Jutland. The farm was first documented in 1536, and the existing house was built in 1852. Currently abandoned, the house has 10 rooms that will serve as exhibition sites for 10
artists to exhibit videos and/or install works.
Topophilia explores a sense of place, which is intertwined with cultural identity. The Nørager Farmhouse, a geometric structure firmly situated in place and cultural context, will house videos and installations that intervene in the pastoral landscape by looking outward into the spaces of intimate interiors from distant places. The exhibition will confront expectations of domestic spaces that are geographically and culturally different from the structure in which they are contained.
Artists working with film, video, moving image, animation, installation, or new media are encouraged to submit works that can disrupt the rigid geometry of the farmhouse and disorient the dichotomy of 'here' and 'there.' Some topics may include: Social, political and emotional dynamics in the home; Interpretations of the domestic, especially in relation to the home; Personal as political; Internal and external structures; Inside/outside or here/there dichotomies.
About MEETINGS:
MEETINGS is a video and performance project taking place in Denmark's 7 municipalities in Mid and West Jutland (Herning, Lemvig, Struer, Holstebro, Ringkøbing-Skjern, Ikast-Brande, and Skive) 2016-2019. The project is rooted in the association ET4U – Contemporary visual art projects Mid & Western Jutland (et4u.dk) but in a broad collaboration with a number of cultural institutions in the area. During a 4-year period, we invite international contemporary artists for shorter or longer residences in the mid and west Jutland area to produce a number of videos and performances dealing with, taking place in, and produced in collaboration with the mid and west Jutland area - an artistic look at the area seen from the outside. The project will have 2 festivals - in September 2017 and September 2019, where produced works will be shown in suitable but untraditional/unexpected places in the local area.
Selection and Eligibility:
Completed or in progress works in film, video, moving image, animation, installation or new media will be considered.
Artists can submit a maximum of 2 works for consideration. There is no time restraint to the length of the works. Individuals of all ages, genders, races, and nationalities will be considered. Individuals from the Global South are especially encouraged to apply.
Participating artists will receive 1500 DKR (approximately 200 Euro). Unfortunately, we are unable to support travel to artists for the exhibition.
Deadline for applications: March 31, 2017
