REVOLUTIONS. AN ALTERNATIVE GAZE
Images by BILL OWENS
A project by CLAUDIA ZANFI
Fifty years after the symbolic date of 1968, the exhibition proposes to investigate those artistic expressions that were inspired by political and cultural protests, revolutionary hope, libertarian impulses of '68. Starting from the first riots against the Vietnam war, to continue with the student movements, those expressions have developed an attempt to create new 'political' and 'popular' artistic languages. The exhibition starts with BILL OWENS, a master of photography which has documented important historical moments such as the student Riots (1968) at the Berkeley University and the Altamont (1969) concert by Rolling Stones for an hippy, unsatified generation. Those years originated a real expressive language that was both innovative and addressed to the large masses of people, where the comparison between art and pop culture, between photography and what was called 'propaganda', is one of the most interesting reasons.
This series of black and white photographs documents the rise of the campus protest movements in San Francisco on 1967/68. Bill Owens captured the students' desire to stand up and rise their voice against the war in Vietnam, against segregation and discrimination. Bill Owens' photography rapresents a kind of 'visual anthropologist' describing a real 'fresco' of the cultural revolution that signed the entire world in the Sixties.
