Video essays and videographic scholarship are increasingly visible in a variety of contexts: digital humanities and artistic research; commercial media, cinema, and video art; social media and community-building projects. This two-day symposium will focus on the creative possibilities of this form, and how different contexts provide different conditions for the fusion of research and creative expression.
A gathering of leading practitioners from diverse backgrounds are invited to share the methods they have devised to find insights and aesthetic expressions by working with video essays. Their presentations will offer practical case studies and serve as a basis for more theoretical understandings of what the video essay can afford research and artistic practices.
Among the questions to be explored by this symposium:
How do videographic methods transform relations and open new possibilities within such diverse areas of practice as video art and filmmaking, media education and scholarship, media industry and law?
How can video editing software work as an instrument of study and research, as well as offer a poetics of expression?
Has videographic criticism yielded a unique and established aesthetics of research? What kinds of aesthetic positions have emerged among video essay practices?
With lectures and talks by Michael Baute, Miriam Kellerhals, Matthias Müller Catherine Grant,Charlie Shackleton (formerly Charlie Lyne), Chloé Galibert-Laîné, Jiri Anger, Grace Lee and Liz Greene.
