Art Paris 2019 celebrates women artists

From 4th to 7th April 2019, Art brings together 150 exhibitors from 20 countries under the glassroof of the Grand Palais. This 21st edition will give place of pride to women artists.

A Gaze at Women Artists in France by AWARE*

In 2019, Art Paris is paying tribute to women artists in France. To this end, AWARE : Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions was asked to select 25 artists amongst those presented by participating galleries. This selection provides a critical and subjective overview of women artists in France from the post-war period to the present day. The ensemble has been divided into four themes: abstraction, with figures who need no introduction such as Judit Reigl and Aurélie Nemours and others who deserve to be rediscovered, such as Vera Pagava and Bernadette Bour; the feminist avant-garde from the 1970s with ORLAN and Esther Ferrer; artists such as Valérie Belin or Sophie Ristelhueber who applied a visual arts approach to photography from the end of the 1980, amongst whom numerous women artists distinguished themselves; and finally, a younger generation brought together around questions in connection with the theatre and scenery, both in painting and installation art, notably with Karina Bisch and Ulla von Brandenburg.
AWARE has also been invited to write a critical essay that situates each artist's work in its historical context.
In parallel to the AWARE selection, numerous galleries have chosen to present women artists from France and abroad. Thus, the number of women artists at the fair has increased by almost 50 % compared to the previous edition and 43 % of the solo shows feature women.

Amazones, a selection of works by Latin American women artists
from the Catherine Petitgas Collection

As part of the focus on Latin America, the fair's other major theme in 2019, Art Paris is hosting a selection of works by Latin American women artists from the collection of Catherine Petitgas. Entitled Amazones, this exhibition brings together works by women artists from the countries of the Amazon Basin, mainly from Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela. All of these artists address the question of female identity, in particular in ethnic minorities, as well as the tropical aesthetic of these biodiversity-rich regions whose environment is threatened.
