VISUAL ARTS: CONTEMPORARY VISUAL PRACTICES
Fundamental aims of the programme
Postgraduate Visual Arts programme: contemporary visual practices combine an
interdisciplinary and intertextual teaching system that equips students with advanced knowledge in the field of visual arts and theory. The postgraduate study programme is oriented in a way that reflects the challenges, needs and requirements of the time in which we live. A corpus of knowledge and behaviour acquired by a postgraduate student within the framework of the study program at the AVA- Academy of Visual Arts provides the highest level of professionalism and professionalisation in the field of study, which represents the key to the establishment of a professional career. The study programme ensures acquisition of advanced elements of art as well as the most advanced artistic practices. In addition to the practical skills acquired by a postgraduate student, the study program includes the acquisition of advanced theoretical instruments, which complements their own artistic practice. A set of practical and theoretical knowledge in the field of visual arts is a study programme that is not only innovative in terms of simultaneous interaction between practice and theory, but also unique in the Slovenian educational system in the field of art.
Mastering all the basic elements that form a postgraduate study programme Visual arts: modern visual practices and theory ensures that the student after a master's thesis is professionally trained both in the field of practice and in the field of theory, which enables him to work independently as well as the continuation of the study and research paths at phD level.
The basic objectives of the study program are:
• ability to develop an independent artistic career,
• ability to engage in the professional working environment of the arts and cultural industries,
• interdisciplinary and intertextual thinking and action,
• a comprehensive conceptual project and production process in the practical and theoretical field,
• the rationale of their own research and working paradigms,
• teamwork within complex professional areas,
• professional national and international action,
• capable of advanced applications and understanding of the most demanding procedures,
• qualified for independent operation and research,
• professional development and implementation of the exhibition/event/presentation or thesis at the highest level
A detailed description of the objectives and competences acquired by the student during and after the completion of the postgraduate study program Visual arts: contemporary visual practices and theory is stated in every study unit.
Students gain these general competences:
• qualified for advanced independent work and research in the field of visual arts and theory,
• the ability to carry out advanced analyses, research and projects in the field of expertise,
• the ability to critically understand the artistic and wider social structure,
• the ability to work professionally and to engage in a professional field,
• the ability to place their own artistic and theoretical practice into the structure and professional environment of art and theory,
• the ability to generate concepts and conceptual solutions in their own field of expertise, as in other areas in direct and indirect connection,
• the ability to comprehensively understand concepts, discourses, methodologies and ideas related to a wide range of contemporary artistic and theoretical discourses,
• the ability to comprehensively understand visual research, analyzes, skills and knowledge that fit and support self-initiative creative practices,
• the ability to communicate ideas and arguments in a visual, written and oral form,
• the ability to develop appropriate content frameworks that include historical and contemporary references to their own artistic and theoretical practices in demanding creative environments,
• the ability of high professional and professional approaches to the practices of visual arts and other practices in the cultural industry,
• a high level of problem solving using appropriate methodologies, technologies and processes,
Students gain these subject specific competences:
• advanced knowledge in the field of conceptual art, work and theory,
• advanced knowledge of artistic and theoretical methods of research,
• ability of advanced applications, understanding and use of professional and working practices,
• capable of discursive thinking, advanced understanding and use of professional and scientific texts and analyses,
• advanced knowledge of the system of valorization, historization and evaluation in the art system,
• an advanced knowledge of the aesthetic/formalistic regime and the socio-critical/political regime of production in art,
• advanced knowledge of the simultaneous interaction between artistic practice and theory and a comprehensive conceptual production process in the practical and theoretical field,
• is capable of project planning and independent work and research in the artistic and theoretical field,
• advanced knowledge in the field of material and media knowledge, project design and work, and working practices and procedures,
• capable of preparing appropriate methodology of work and research within an artistic/research project,
• advanced understanding of the artistic system, the cultural and creative industries in the local, national and international space,
• professional competence for solving specific artistic and scientific/research problems in the field of visual arts and theory,
• advanced interdisciplinary and intermedia activities in the local, national and international space,
• advanced knowledge of the connection between professional and personal development and the preparation of appropriate research and analysis of the professional context,
• capable of research and professional development in the artistic, scientific and research field.
