Jointly with the Vroman Foundation, we are offering a 6-month fellowship at the Jan van Eyck Academie for an artist, a writer or a designer who works on the intersection of art and science. In the spirit of polymath Leo Vroman (poet, writer, visual artist, biologist and haematologist 1915-2014), the Vroman Fellowship is open to an (inter)national artist–scientist with an inquisitive approach towards interdisciplinary thinking.
– Residency period: 1 November 2021 – 30 April 2022
– Application deadline: 6 May 2021
As a multi-disciplinary post-academic institute, the Jan van Eyck Academie offers residency programmes to those who wish to broaden their artistic horizons and develop their art practice in depth. In the upcoming years, the Jan van Eyck Academie is committed to exploring the agency, roles, and civic significance of art, design and other creative practices in relation to climate change, environmental breakdown, and their manifold effects. This institutional focus aims at creating a common-ground that embraces a diversity of practices and allows for a multitude of voices.
The selected Fellow will have a chance to further develop their research and projects using all the Jan van Eyck facilities at hand and make use of its labs – Photography & Audiovisual, Printing & Publishing, Food, Material Matters –, departments – Nature Research, Art & Society, Research & Education –, as well as the library. As a Vroman Fellow, the Jan van Eyck participant will also be able to network and collaborate with fellow participants, as well as gather expertise from the academy's guests, advisers, and staff members. The Fellow will receive access to own studio, a monthly stipend of € 1 000, a working budget of € 1 091, as well as accommodation for the duration of the residency period.

The Vroman Foundation manages a major part of the estate of Leo and Tineke Vroman. The Foundation brings the richly diverse oeuvre of Leo Vroman to public attention by means of exhibitions, lectures and theatrical productions. It also aims to stimulate the talent development of young artists and scientists who work in a spirit similar to that of Leo Vroman: curious, transgressing boundaries, investigative and original.
